Over 60,000 candidates receive short-term vocational training each year through the Karnataka skill development corporation and the state’s flagship skill development programme, the Chief Minister’s Kaushalya Karnataka Yojana, both of which are administered by the Karnataka Skill Development Corporation (KSDC), established in 2008. Schemes Offered By Karnataka Skill Development Corporation:
1. Chief Minister’s Kaushalya Karnataka Yojana (CMKKY):
- The Chief Minister’s Kaushalya Karnataka Yojana (CMKKY) is the state of Karnataka’s flagship programme for short-term vocational skilling to support youth entrepreneurship, employment, and self-employment.
- By this programme, young people between the ages of 18 and 35 can sign up for free skill training in close to 3,000 NSQF-aligned job roles across more than 35 industries, including, among others, apparel, automotive, BFSI, IT&ITeS, healthcare, electronics, agriculture, retail, and tourism.

2. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY):
- Its flagship initiative is the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) of the Government of India’s Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
- The objective of this skill certification programme is to enable numerous young Indians to enrol in training that is pertinent to their business and would increase their chances of landing a job. 5. SANKALP-Other Special Initiatives:
With the support of the World Bank, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India, has launched the SANKALP programme – Skill Acquisition and Knowledge Awareness for Livelihood Promotion to improve the quality of short-term training through strengthening institutions, bring in better market connectivity and inclusion of marginalised sections of the society.
Language Laboratories: Five labs in 3 GTTCs (Challakere, Koppal & Yadgir ) and 2 ITI s (Kollegal & Mangalore):
A state-of-the-art IT-enabled audio-visual studio integrating superior technological equipment was developed and designed into an acoustical ambience language lab at five locations throughout the state in response to the growing need for and relevance of language labs.
The language labs will be a valuable tool for the students to overcome the shortcomings of English language teaching learning techniques, represented in poor communication, erroneous pronunciations, and inability to understand native accents and idioms. At each lab, 200 students will receive training over the following six months.
English Language and 21st-Century Skills Training:
500 trainers will receive the training, which will take place in Karnataka’s backward districts of Bidar, Kalburgi, Yadgir, Raichur, Uttara Kannada, Chamarajanagar, Kolar, Koppal, Chitradurga, and Haveri. An introduction to the programme was given. The training programme for 7 batches, totalling 300 participants, from the districts of Yadgir, Koppal, Chamarajanagar, Raichur, and Gulbarga has been completed. By February 2022, all remaining batches will have been processed. The budget’s second instalment is now available.

Skill on Wheels – Kaushalya Ratha:
Under the Skills Acquisition and Knowledge Awareness for Livelihood Promotion (SANKALP) programme, which the World Bank supports, Mobile Training Centers Skill on Wheels or Kaushalya Ratha is a particular project by KSDC to improve access to skills for the rural youth in the state.
In the pilot phase of the “Skill on Wheels” or “Kaushalya Ratha” initiative, well-equipped buses with the necessary tools and infrastructure and employing skilled trainers for skill development have been deployed in four districts in North Karnataka.
These mobile training facilities will visit rural and distant areas of Karnataka to impart skills to young people between the ages of 18 and 35 who have completed at least the eighth grade. There will be 15 candidates in each batch.
The initiative aims to empower underprivileged populations, such as rural youth, people with disabilities, and women, by developing skills for entrepreneurship and self-employment. Youth are trained in the first phase to work as Assistant Beauty Therapists in Yadgir and Haveri districts and Basic Electrical Technicians in Raichur and Bidar districts.
To become an electrician technician, candidates must complete a 200-hour training programme that includes curated modules on domestic wiring, motor winding, and electrical appliance repair. To become a beauty therapist, candidates must complete modules on makeup applications, manicures, pedicures, hairstyles, and henna art.
